Teeth are incredibly strong. In fact, tooth enamel is the strongest substance in the entire body. However, it isn’t completely indestructible. What Is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are customized “caps” that are placed over the chewing surfaces of decayed and damaged teeth. They are crafted to completely cover the remaining structure of a single tooth, helping to preserve it while replenishing its natural shape and strength. There are many reasons why a dental crown may be recommended. Here are the most common ones:

  • Severe tooth decay that can’t be treated with a filling
  • Physical injury to a tooth
  • Weakened tooth structure that needs support to prevent fracturing
  • Significant cosmetic imperfections
  • Restoring a lost tooth that has been replaced with a dental implant
  • Protecting a tooth that hasn’t been treated with root canal treatment

The Dental Crown Process

Dental crowns are placed over two separate appointments. During the first visit, we will begin with numbing the area with a local anesthetic. Then, we will remove the damaged and decayed potions of your tooth structure.  We will also remove a small amount of enamel from around the tooth to allow the crown to fit comfortably. After the tooth is prepped, impressions are taken and sent to a dental lab. A temporary crown is placed and in a couple of weeks, you can return to receive your final restoration.

At Burncoat Family Dentistry, we also offer CEREC same-day dental crowns. The process it mostly the same except you don’t need to get a temporary dental crown and wait several weeks to receive your restoration. Instead, we use CEREC technology to mill your dental crown right here in our office. You can get your new dental crown on the same day!
